Athens, GA

Westchester

Westchester neighborhood is another vibrant, close-knit community with a rich history. The neighborhood is located just minutes from downtown Athens and the University of Georgia, making it a convenient place to live for students, families, and professionals alike.

Westchester has something for everyone, from its lively nightlife to its abundance of parks and green space. The neighborhood is also home to a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as schools and other amenities.

Parks and Scenery

The Westchester neighborhood is an isolated area of the city, nestled on the banks of the Middle Oconee River. Ben Burton Park is one of several local parks and features wooded walking paths and boat rentals. Pets are permitted, but must be kept on a leash. Bring water, bags for waste, and a leash for your dog. The area is also dog-friendly.

Languages and Diversity

Earlier this year, Westchester County Executive George Latimer signed an executive order mandating that public documents be made available in nine additional languages. The purpose of this executive order is to ensure that people with limited English proficiency can participate fully in civic life, communicate with government agencies, and benefit from a more diverse environment. By providing access to language services, we can improve government efficiency and make information available to all citizens.

The Westchester/Huntington Park neighborhood is composed of predominantly Latino and Hispanic residents. While many of these residents identify as English or German, others identify as Irish or Scots-Irish. About 15.8% of residents in this neighborhood were born outside the United States. Although these statistics are not representative of the entire Athens area, they provide a good idea of how many people live in the area and what their average income is.

Income and Economy

The income and economy of Westchester is important to understand how the income and spending habits of different Athenians affect their lifestyle. Low-income residents in the neighborhood spend more than the middle-class Athenians, who are more likely to save and travel outside the county. TSPLOST does not tax the money people spend on outside the county or retirement. That means that the low-income Athenians are more likely to spend their money on necessities and less on leisure.

The Athens-Clarke County Manager’s office issues a monthly update about the city’s finances. The mayor has outlined strategic commitments to help residents better understand what the city can and cannot do. The updates are not exhaustive, but they do highlight important activities and programs. Updated information is in blue text. The Athens-Clarke County Public Information Office is also committed to improving the neighborhood’s business climate.
